Who we are

Our Mission

Mahkiya’s Journey started as a dream that turned into a college research project that has now become something much bigger than anything we could have ever imagined. We are committed to the idea that anything is possible if you believe in your dreams and work hard and have a great support system behind you. We are family-run and operated and believe every child is capable of greatness. Your circumstances don’t define you; your actions do.

Who is Mahkiya, and what is her journey?

Taylor Jenkins, our President, is Mahkiya. Mahkiya is her middle name and a nickname used by her mother. Taylor’s father was incarcerated when she was two years old. He left her and her 22-year-old mother to go on without him while he remained behind bars till she was 16 years old. Due to her support system throughout her entire childhood, she defied the odds and didn’t continue the cycle of intergenerational incarceration. Through the support of her mother, grandparents, teachers, and mentors, she grew to become strong-willed, caring, and independent. No one person is responsible for the success that she has had in her life. It truly does take a village to raise a child. She was given opportunities that not every child in her position is provided, which is why "Mahkiya’s Journey” was created. Taylor dreams that every child is given a chance to defy the odds and become whatever they set their mind to. The sky is the limit. And we are just getting started!
